Collage Artist, Kate Rivers creates dramatic pieces in her “Nest” series for her exhibition entitled “Migration”.
Rivers collects and uses what she calls ephemera: papers of all sorts: tickets, labels, receipts, maps, stamps, hand written letters, book bindings every day detritus. One piece might be made from nothing but clothing labels, tags and shopping bags. Another the paraphernalia of travel such as ticket stubs, receipts and maps. And other antique memorabilia.
Some of her collages are in shapes of nests made from the ephemera as a bird would collect and weave together to create a home that has the theme of travel or letters. Book bindings become trees in other collages.
For Rivers the exhibit “Migration” is about shifting spaces and transformation. Literally creating through collage nests and homes from various collected experiences.
